When I first decided to give this blogging malarkey a go the vision was always to write about what I love – horror. Having always had a passion for film, and particularly due to the abundance of free time thanks to lockdown, it’s understandable that my posts so far have focused solely on horror on screen – but my love for the genre goes so much farther than this, bleeding into everything I do.
I must admit, another great love in my life (though it’s more of a love/hate relationship lately until the gyms reopen) is food. Whilst cookery shows aren’t really my thing, one huge exception is obviously The Bake Off – which I end up watching religiously every series.
It’s probably no surprise that I immediately fell in love with the wonderfully witchy Helena when she appeared on the show back in 2019.

Helena’s creepy cakes matched her spooky style and I couldn’t wait to get a copy of her book ‘The Wicked Baker’ when it launched.

The recipe book contains instructions for treats ranging from sponge cakes to savoury pies to cocktails, with simple guides that are easy to follow.
The recipes are accompanied by stunning photographs of the creations, elegantly laid out in opulent, gothic settings.

I finally got around to trying some of the recipes out for myself, and whilst I definitely need some work on my presentation skills – I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty things turned out.

Whilst I’m not quite ready for the Bake Off myself, The Wicked Baker is definitely a fun book that provides some inspiration for something a little bit more exciting than your everyday sponge.
